Double data rate (DDR SDRAM) synchronous dynamic random access memory is a common type of memory. It is used as ram for most modern processors, DDR Ram was invented in the year 2000. Dynamic random access memory was the first in general performance, introduced in the 1970s. This posed a problem organizing the data as it could be irritating to the process to which it is attached. Because it was not able to work with the processors that are working now. DDR Ram is more active than other ram and also more in working capacity. DDR Ram gives more speed in computer or laptop. The DDR Ram is something that is being used in the latest such as -DDR1 , DDR2 , DDR3 , and DDR4. Let us understand all these one by one.
What is DDR1 RAM
DDR SDRAM or DDR RAM, or Double-Data-Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory, is a type of very fast computer memory. It has the same architecture as SDRAM, but it uses a different clock signal to transfer twice as much data in the same amount of time.
The speed of RAM interacts with the FSB, the front side bus of the computer system. The FSB is a two-way data channel that sends information from the CPU to various components such as RAM, BIOS chips, hard drives, and PCI slots throughout the motherboard. As a result, a computer system with an FSB of 133 MHz and DDR SDRAM will perform similarly to a 266 MHz machine. DDR RAM is generally made for processors 1GHz and faster.
DDR1 RAM-This Ram was launched in the year 2000, this 2.5 voltage and has a density of 128 MB. It is with 166 mt speed, so it is not more than 1gb model. This RAM is in 2 bit and 100-200 MHz. The 184-pin DDR RAM dual in-line memory modules (DIMMS) can only be used on motherboards that are specifically designed for them. While this RAM is available in a variety of speeds, installing a faster version than a motherboard can support is a waste of money because it will only run as fast as the motherboard allows.
What is DDR2 RAM
DDR2 SDRAM is an abbreviation for Double Data Rate 2 Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory, also known as DDR2 RAM. DDR2 memory operates at the same external data bus clock rate as DDR because the DDR2 internal clock runs at half the DDR external clock rate, allowing DDR2 RAM to provide the same bandwidth but with lower latency.
In other words, DDR2 RAM operating at twice the DDR external data bus clock rate can provide twice the bandwidth while maintaining the same latency. The best DDR2 memory module has at least twice the speed of the best DDR memory module.
DDR2 RAM was officially launched in the second quarter of 2003, with two initial clock rates: 200 MHz (called PC2-3200) and 266 MHz (PC2-4200). Because of the higher latency, both performances were worse than the original DDR specification, resulting in a longer total access time.
DDR2 RAM-DDR2 Ram was released in 2004 and it is 1.8 operates at a voltage that is less than DDR1. The density of this RAM is doubled to 256MB so it is up to a 2GB module. It is 4 bit and its speed has reached 533 MHz. DDR2 can transfer more than one data in Ram, and data transfer is faster than DDR1.
What is DDR3 RAM
DDR3, which stands for double data rate three, is a type of DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) that was introduced in June 2007 as the successor to DDR2. DDR3 chips have bus clock speeds ranging from 400 MHz to 1066 MHz, memory capacities ranging from 1 to 24 GB, and consume nearly 30% less power than their predecessors. A desktop computer’s DDR3 RAM sticks have 240 pins. DDR3 RAM sticks for laptop computers have 204 pins.
DDR3 RAM-This ram was launched in 2007, is in upgrade version from DDR 2, its speed is also two times. This Ram operates with 4 bit and 1.5 voltage, this ram works fast. This RAM has a base speed of 1066MHz and the density has reached over 8GB.
What is DDR4 RAM
DDR4 is an abbreviation for “Double Data Rate 4.” DDR4 is the fourth generation of DDR RAM, which is commonly found in desktop and laptop computers. It was first introduced in 2014, but it did not gain widespread acceptance until 2016.
Some notable DDR4 specifications are as follows;
- 16 GB and 32 GB are common capacities. 1600 to 4400 MHz clock speed 17 to 35.2 GB/s data transfer rate
- 1.2 volts of electricity
- A regular DIMM has 288 pins, while a SO-DIMM has 260 pins.
DDR4 RAM-This Ram was launched in 2014 and currently runs at the highest speed. This is Ram is operated from 1.2 the voltage which the Ram is powered from the lowest voltage so far. DDR 4 works faster than Ram , DDR1 , DDR 2 , and DDR 3. The base of this RAM started from 2133MHz, and is currently based on 32GB module. Computer technology is constantly changing.
What is DDR5 RAM
DDR4 random-access memory (RAM) has been a standard component in most computers since 2015. Nonetheless, DDR5, the next generation of double data rate memory that offers faster data transfer rates, higher clock speeds, greater efficiency, and lower power consumption, has finally surpassed it. DDR5 memory modules have a higher die density, which means that DDR5 sticks larger than 64GB will be available soon.
DDR5 memory modules are the newest memory module standard for consumer PCs, debuting alongside Intel’s 12th Generation Core processors (led by the Core i9-12900K) and Z690-chipset motherboards. The Z690 chipset (hence the name “Z690”) was the first to support DDR5 memory modules and Alder Lake processors.
The new RAM architecture also introduces some notable changes. DDR5 modules will have a maximum capacity of 128 GB per unit rather than 32 GB DDR4 modules. Furthermore, DDR5 will double the highest data rate from the previous generation to 6.4 Gbps. Many DDR5 memory kits include onboard overclocking.
- The speed (frequency) of DDR5 RAM is 3200-8400Mbps.
- The capacity of DDR5 RAM is 8Gb, 16Gb, 24Gb, 32Gb, 64Gb.
- DDR5 offers a rise in data rates, high capacity per module and reduced power usage.
DDR5 RAM-This Ram was launched in the year 2020, which is Operated on 1.1 voltage. DDR 5 ram is the best ever which is capable of transferring data twice. This Ram is the latest Ram ever.
Lastly, keep in mind that the number of contact pins in each generation of RAM is as follows:
- DDR1 RAM : 184-Pin 2.5V PC1 2Bit 2000
- DDR2 RAM : 240-Pin 1.8V PC2 4Bit 2003
- DDR3 RAM : 240-Pin 1.5V PC3 8Bit 2007
